It was clear that the fact that putting babies, toddlers and children in cages was a horrific idea. Donald Trump and the Republicans realized that a little bit too late. They tried denying that it was happening. They tried blaming it on the Democrats. Trump tried blaming it on Congress. Kirstjen Nielsen tried lying about all of it. Apparently, it took Ivanka Trump to break through to her father. On Tuesday night, Trump admitted to House Republicans that he knows this was all a huge mistake but he didn’t “want to look weak” by, you know, removing the children from cages. Ivanka apparently came to her father at some point on Monday or Tuesday – when the administration was still ripping babies from their mothers – and told her dad that THE IMAGES of crying children in cages looked bad. Not the actual fact of the children in cages, but “the images” of them.
So Trump finally got off his giant Nazi ass and signed a vague executive order which… doesn’t really stop much. Families are still going to be held in cages, only now the border agents will maybe try to not rip babies and children from their parents. They’ll get to be in the American concentration camps together, possibly. So far, there’s no real reunification plan for the more than 2000 children currently in American custody, in cages. Internet lawyer Southpaw laid out a tweet thread about the vagueness of the EO’s language, and points out that Trump basically signed a document that doesn’t even explicitly say that families will now be held together after all.
